Description
Arepa con Queso is a classic Colombian breakfast dish made with cornmeal and stuffed with melted cheese. These golden, crispy arepas are a perfect balance of crunch and softness, making them a delicious and filling way to start the day.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal (masarepa)
- 1 cup warm water
- ½ cup milk
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or queso fresco
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix the cornmeal, salt, warm water, and milk. Knead until a smooth dough forms. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
- Shape the Arepas: Divide the dough into equal portions and flatten each into a round, about ½-inch thick.
- Stuff with Cheese: Place shredded cheese in the center of one arepa and cover with another, sealing the edges well.
- Cook the Arepas: Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the arepas for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve warm with butter or extra cheese on top, alongside eggs or Colombian-style hot chocolate.
Notes
- For a smoky flavor, you can grill the arepas instead of pan-frying.
- Serve with hogao (Colombian tomato-onion sauce) for an authentic touch.
